Types of Services

Regular updates feature on our Facebook Page so please do join our growing online community to keep up to date with what's happening at Holy Rood.

At the very heart of Holy Rood is worship, where we encounter the mystery of God, and are invited to experience God's love for ourselves.

Our services at Holy Rood are always open to all, and we try hard to welcome newcomers and visitors. If you've never been before, please don't worry - somebody will greet you at the door, make sure you have everything you need, and help you feel at home. Coffee and tea are served after all our services, so that we have a chance to get to know one another.

Please remember that children are always welcome. There is a special area in the church with bags of toys, books, and colouring materials, where you are welcome to sit with babies or toddlers during the service if you would like. We also have a Sunday school, and special children's services on a regular basis. For more details of our provision for children, click here.

Below are details of our regular services.

Regular worship on Sundays is at 8.00 am (First and Third of Month), and 10.15 am.

These services are celebrations of the Eucharist (sometimes called Holy Communion, or the Mass).

The service at 8.00 is smaller, quieter, and more traditional in nature and is held in our Lady Chapel.

The service at 10.15 is our main service. which the majority of our parishioners attend. This is a traditional service with hymns and music.

If you are a first time visitor to Holy Rood don't worry.  Each service has a weekly service sheet that leads you, step by step, through the service.

On the first Sunday of the month, the 10.15 service is family worship, where we are joined by children from the uniformed organisations and our Junior Church for a communion service. On these days the sermon is aimed especially at children. If you have never been before, and you have children, this is a particularly good service to start with. On other Sundays, we have our Junior Church which meets in the Memorial Hall during part of the service and then returns just before the Communion.

Following the 10:15 service we adjourn to the Memorial Hall for light refreshments and convivial conversation.

Once a month, at 6.30 pm on Sunday, we meet with other local churches for an ecumenical service. The style and location of this service varies from month to month.

At 10:00 there is a short celebration of the Eucharist, with special prayers for healing. Afterwards, we meet socially for tea, coffee and fellowship.

On the last Thursday of every month at 6:30 pm we hold a Taize service. This provides an ideal opportunity to de-stress, spend sometime in contemplation and reflection with candles, charts, background music and guided meditation. The service lasts for approximately 45 minutes and is a great opportunity to step off the hamster wheel of life and re energise yourself.

We meet in church at 12:00 for midday prayers.

Occasional Services

e hold a number of occasional services at different times of the year, such as Christmas, Easter, Harvest etc
